President Jonathan Conferring Pa Akinkunmi with the national award of Order of the Federal Republic (OFR)
Fifty-five years after he designed the Nigeria flag, Pa Taiwo Akinkunmi has finally been honored. President Goodluck Jonathan today conferred a national award on Pa Akinkunmi, the Officer of the Order of the Federal Republic (OFR) award. He also placed him (Pa Akinkunmi) on a life time salary.
The president while giving an express approval for the placement of Pa Akinkunmi on a lifetime salary said his salary should be the equivalent of a Senior Special Adviser to the president.
Pa Michael Taiwo Akinkunmi was born on 10th May 1936 in Ibadan. He is married with one wife and kids, He always wear the colors of the Flag he designed as part of his attire, usually wearing a green Yoruba cap, and painted his house with a green white green pattern. He is popularly called Mr. Flag Man.
Among those honoured at the ceremony today, which was held at the International Conference Centre, Abuja were a taxi driver, Mr. Imeh Usuah; a traffic warden, Cpl. Solomon Dauda; and a steward, Mr. Onuh Isaac Michael, who have displayed exemplary performances.
The three of them got house gifts in the Federal Capital Territory from the President in addition to their national awards, Member of the Order of the Niger
The President charged the honourees to ensure that the awards are not seen as mere pieces of paper and garlands tied around their necks.
The Monday's investiture brought to 4,737, the total of the national honours so far conferred on individuals since its inception in 1963.
