Health Minister Onyebuchi Chukwu disclosed October 8 that Nigeria had donated $3.5m to the West African countries badly hit by Ebola outbreak adding that Nigerian volunteers would travel to Liberia, Sierra Leone and Guinea to fight the virus.
While Nigeria has managed to contain the epidemic of the deadly tropical virus, which already sneaked into Europe and the United States, several other countries of the African continent show no signs of improvement.
Punch reports with reference to Chukwu's statement that the donation was distributed by $500,000 to each country and the balance was transferred to the common ECOWAS Fund for the disease.
The health official also mentioned that 591 medical workers volunteered to travel to Sierra Leone, Guinea and Liberi, affected most, to help with Ebola containment.
Chukwu said while briefing journalists in Abuja:
"As part of Nigeria's contributions to the international team that will be set up to tackle Ebola Virus Disease in those countries, already Nigeria volunteers from different health professions have been registering with us, willing to join the international force that will go to Liberia, Sierra Leone and Guinea to help out with the containment."
He however mentioned that the volunteers would be allowed to participate in the progamme only under certain conditions.
Chukwu was quoted by The Nation:
"Before we allow them to leave, certain conditions must be met, the President has to approve for them to leave Nigeria for them to leave as volunteers. Secondly, they have to be given proper training on how they would avoid the disease and ensure that they don't get it. They have to be fully and properly trained according to our standards in Nigeria which is fairly high."
Meanwhile the first US Ebola patient died yesterday in Texas and the first case was this week recorded in Spain. The death toll from the EVD in West Africa has already exceeded 3,700.
