One person drowned yesterday after a passenger boat capsized at Coconut Island, Lagos, while nine others were rescued alive.
The incident occurred barely three weeks after a similar incident occurred along same axis.
The Tin-Can Island, Apapa Local Government, bound boat reportedly left the Ojo Jetty, with about ten passengers and was heading for Tin-Can Island when it capsized. Time was 10.30am
Spokesman for the National Emergency Management Agency, NEMA, South West zone, Mr. Ibrahim Farinloye, who confirmed the incident, said the tragic incident occurred after a wave from a tug boat belonging to the Nigeria Ports Authority, NPA, which was towing a ship to habour , swept off the local boat.
Consequently, the boat according to him, became imbalanced and capsized.
Passengers on the boat who were reportedly with their life saving jackets were flung in different directions.
While some of them managed to swim to safety, others could not, until rescue operators among who were officials of the Nigerian National Inland Waterway Authority, NIWA, Lagos State Waterways Authority, LASWA, National Emergency Management Agency, NEMA and the Marine Police arrived.
Farinloye said: "Two of the passengers that had minor injuries were rushed to the hospital where they were treated and discharged while others left for their respective destinations.
"But a man who identified himself as the elder brother of one Mr Idris Adekunle, told us that his brother was still missing. One of the rescued passengers confirmed that Mr Idris Adekunle was in the same boat with him and was with his personal life saving jacket. Search and rescue operation for the missing person is ongoing", he stated.
