'Big Daddy', a short film byChris Ihidero, recently broke the YouTube record for the Nigerian film with the most views onYouTubeand we are super proud.
Big Daddy is a short film based on the story of a young girl, sexually violated by her uncle, right under her parent's nose. The film was originally produced by Amaka Igwe in 2004, and written and directed by Chris Ihidero, who also directs MTV's Shuga.
Speaking on what inspired the movie, Chris Ihidero said:
"We decided to make a film on rape because we believe that, for our society to truly combat this abnormality, we need to lay our collective shame bare. We need to strip off the layers upon layers of coverings that hide the realities of rape and sexual abuse.""We believe that we all need to come clean and accept the blame for whatever part we have played, consciously or not, in ensuring that rape victims continue to lack support and justice, and lives continue to get ruined. We fear that unless we collectively do something quickly, anarchy may be loosed upon us all in the very near future."
According to data released today by digital agency ID Africa, the short film has been seen over 510,000 times, with viewers spending cumulatively over 1.2 million minutes watching the film. The United States accounts for 32% of the total audience, 15% in India, 7% in Saudi Arabia, 6% in the United Kingdom and 3% in Nigeria, making it the most viewed Nigerian short film.
In almost four years since being released to widespread acclaim, the film has received multiple local and international awards, including the AMAA Awards and the AMVCAs.
