The former Liverpool and West Ham defender and the current head coach of Chad's national team was rushed to a nearby hospital from his Yaounde home on Sunday after suffering a cerebral aneurysm and is in critical condition.
He represented his country 137 times, playing in four World Cup finals and a record eight African Nations Cups competitions as well as winning Olympic gold in 2000. He is the uncle of former Arsenal and Barcelona midfielderAlex Song.
Fellow Cameroonian star Samuel Eto'oposted a picture of Song on Facebook with the caption: "I wish you a lot of courage and a speedy recovery big brother!"
His former Liverpool teammatesJamie Carragher, Stan CollymoreandRobbie Fowleralso posted messages of sympathy in the wake of the news.
Song made his name in Europe at French side Metz, joining Liverpool in 1999 after a short spell in Italy. He moved to West Ham in 2000 before eventually returning to France in 2002 with Lens. He switched to Turkish giants Galatasaray in 2004, playing for the Istanbul outfit for four years. He ended his career in 2010 after a two-year spell at Trabzonspor.
