Only two Nigerian institution, Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU), Ife, and the Covenant University, Otta, made it into the top thirty (30) institutions in Africa, according to the latest rankings by Cybermetrics Lab(Spanish National Research Council, CSIC).
No Nigerian university made it to the top 10, with OAUonly making a show in the 19th position andCovenant Universitytaking the 25th position.
However, it is interesting to note that Nigeria's Madonna University, in a dismal 94th position has the best Excellence Rank of 5442 alongside Libyan International Medical University which is in the 7th position.
In the top 30, Covenant University Covenant University has the best Excellence Rank with 2993 points, Kenyatta University comes second with 2484 points while OAU scored 2340 points.
This is impressive, taking into consideration the fact that the University of Cape Town, ranked number 1 in the continent, has only 267 as its excellence points.
The importance of excellence ranking isunderlined by Cybermetrics Lab in this statementabout it:
"The academic papers published in high impact international journals are playing a very important role in the ranking of Universities."
"Using simply the total number of papers can be misleading, so we are restricting the indicator to only those excellent publications, i.e. the university scientific output being part of the 10% most cited papers in their respective scientific fields."
Going by the new ranking,Obafemi is therefore the best University in Nigeria followed by Covenant Universityand University of Ibadan in second and third positions respectively.
