Y'know how half the selfies on Instagram are tagged "#omg #nofilter #freshfaced #flawless" yet somehow look as though they popped out of a Maybelline ad? HOW DOES THIS HAPPEN? Well on top of the three gagillion self-editing apps in the App store, there is now one developed with the sole intent of making its users lookthinner. No, we are not fucking with you
.
SkinneePix(lol) will shave off all the extra pudge you think you see in a selfie, so that you can flaunt your best face to the virtual world (*throw up in our mouths right now*). With the click of a button, you get to choose whether you want to "lose" 5, 10, or 15 pounds from your frame because…#America.
It's no surprise that there's an audience for SkinneePix, however, we live in the age of the selfie. The pressure to look as good as a photoshopped Kim Kardashian or a stick-thin Anne Hathaway is real, they are, after all, our new icons.
Technology has moved fast in a year. We once covered the bags underneath our eyes, or the pimple on our foreheads with a simple filter, now we're drastically altering our appearance in the hopes, quite literally, being "liked." Not only is this instilling the mentality that thinner is better, but its also promoting serious self-esteem issues for its users.
The sad reality that these types of apps exist, and will be downloaded time and time again, says a lot about how our generation is dealing with body image issues. Work out and promote healthy habits, or take a pic and throw it in a "slenderizer"?Hide behind a screen, the virtual you is much sexier than the real you. We've got to do better, and work to promote the idea that hiding behind tech like SkinneePix is impractical. We've got to better our real selves from the inside out
