A 22-year-old Muslim model sparked controversy, as she posed unclad for American Apparel's new 'Made in Bangladesh' campaign. Dhaka-born Maks, who immigrated to California, the U.S.A., with her family at the age of four, has opened up about her decision to star in the ad. Maks has decided to 'distance' herself from Islam in high school, and currently works as a retail strategist, based in L.A. "I was fully comfortable with the photo shoot and went with it," the girl,
who did not reveal her surname, told MailOnline.
She saw the campaign as an opportunity to show how "all women should feel strong and powerful no matter what their background or what they were taught they had to be". In the controversial photo, the model poses wearing just a pair of American Apparel high-waist jeans. However, according to the authors, the purpose of the message is not to speak about Maks's Muslim origin, but to raise awareness of extremely small salaries and low safety levels in Bangladesh's apparel industry.
