After an extensive 17-day search, Malaysian authorities announced this afternoon that missing Malaysian Airline flight MH370 crashed into the Indian Ocean
Malaysian President Najib Razak announced on Monday that missing flight MH370 crashed into the Indian Ocean with no survivors.
In a statement to the families of those with relatives on board, a spokesperson for said: "We deeply regret that we have to assume beyond any reasonable doubt that MH370 has been lost and that none of those on board have survived.. we must now accept that all evidence suggests the plane went down in the Southern Indian Ocean."
Malaysian Prime Minister Najib Razak held a press conference at 10:00 pm (4pm South African time), after authorities indicated they were close to retrieving suspected debris from missing flight MH370. At the press conference he said:
"With deep sadness and regret I must inform you that, according to this new data, flight #MH370ended in the southern Indian Ocean."

The announcement came after families of the missing passengers were called to an urgent meeting with the airline this afternoon. Sky Newsreports that the families will be flown from Beijing to Australia after debris was spotted floating on the surface of the southern Indian Ocean.
Apparently a Royal Australian Air Force P3 Orion aircraft has reported seeing the debris approximately 2 500km south west of Perth.
The 239 passengers and crew missing since 8 March are now believed to have been killed in the crash.
