Four officers of theNigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), Kogi state command, have been sanctioned for assaulting journalists and staff of the the Lokoja office ofJoint Admission and Matriculation Board (JAMB).
A pregnant woman was among the members of staff assaulted by the officers on Wednesday.
The Commandant of the Kogi State Command,Clement Adesuyi,said the officers have been duly punished on the orders of Commandant General of NSCDC,Dr. Ade Abolurin.
Adesuyi, who was speaking at the secretariat of the Nigeria Union of Journalists in Lokoja on Thursday, apologised for his officers' 'gross misconduct'.
He took the injured members of staff to private hospitals and also promised to repair the gate damaged by his officers.
The Invasion
In what looked like a military invasion, scores of officers of the Nigerian NSCDC has stormed the JAMB office about 10am, on Wednesday.
Led by one R.C.M Jegede, according to aLeadershipreport, the officers attacked the security men manning the gate on grounds that the security outfit they worked for,SPITEC, was unregistered and thus illegal.
The attempt by the coordinator of JAMB , Mr Daniel Agbo, and members of staff only earned them the ire of the officers.
In the ensuing confusion, the Agbo and several members of his staff were severely beaten.
Student Pulsegathered that that the JAMB Accountant and another member of staff were stripped naked, beaten and arrested.
A pregnant woman was also allegedly left in a coma after the attack.
In a continuation of the violence, journalists who visited the NSCDC to investigate the matter office were assaulted.
The Motive
Adesuyi however said the NSCDC is mandated to register all private guard companies.
He revealed that intelligence reports suggest that the dreadedBoko Haramsect is planning to make inroads intoKogihough private security firms.
