An undergraduate,Eldred Jonah, has been arrested by the Department of State Service (DSS) alongside five others for the kidnap of Chief Nitabai Inengite, an uncle ofPresident Goodluck Jonathan.
According to the DSS, the 30-year-old suspect, a 400 levels undergraduate at theUniversity of Jos (UJ).
He is said to be the leader of the gang that kidnapped Chief Inengite on the 23rd of February, 2014 at Otuoke Community in Ogbia Local government ofBayelsaState.
Other members of the gang included a herbalist and three others.
Spokeswoman of the DSS, Marilyn Ogar, told newsmen on Thursday that the suspects held Chief Inengite for 17 days before releasing him without collecting a ransom.
"He was held captive at two different locations within Bayelsa State; the creek of Brass, very close to the Atlantic Ocean and Okigbene creeks," she said.
Ogar revealed that the gang leader was given aN40,000by some unidentified persons for the procurement of arms and logistics for the operation.
Jonah corroborated Ogar's information, adding that he was contracted by a third party who is now at large with the promise of being rewarded after the operation.
The herbalists who also admitted to being part of the kidnap plot said four persons, including a member of the gang, contacted him to prepare a charm for fortification and success in the kidnap of a rich man that resides in Bayelsa.
In Ogar's words, the herbalist "played along with them to save himself and family."
