Tracy Morgan remains hospitalized, but in good spirits, following a deadly multi-car crash on the New Jersey Turnpike, which left him and several others in critical condition early Saturday morning. "He's got a brace on his neck, but he's smiling," a source close to the "30 Rock" star said.
"His family is now with him and he is receiving excellent care," Morgan's publicist Lewis Kay said in a statement. She said the comedian has been more responsive today, but sustained multiple injuries including a broken femur, a broken nose and several broken ribs. "His family is tremendously overwhelmed and appreciative of the outpouring of love and support from his fans," the rep said, adding he'll most likely remain hospitalized for the next few weeks.
According to reports, the accident killed Tracy's longtime friend and writing partner James "Jimmy Mack" McNair, and injured four others. Prosecutors have charged 35-year-old truck driver Kevin Roper with death by auto and four counts of assault by auto. Police said that Roper was dozing off moments before the chain-reaction collision. He turned himself in Saturday night and bail was set at $50,000.
Wal-Mart CEO Bill Simon expressed sorrow over the accident and said his company will take full responsibility if found at fault. "This is a tragedy and we are profoundly sorry that one of our trucks was involved," he said. "The facts are continuing to unfold. If it's determined that our truck caused the accident, Wal-Mart will take full responsibility."
