ICPC warns tertiary institutions against extortion

he Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission has cautioned tertiary institutions in Nigeria against students' extortion.
The spokesperson for the commission, Mr. Folu Olamiti, in a statement on Friday, said the warning followed petitions the ICPC received over extortion of levies from students.
He said the petitions showed that a tertiary institution was extorting levies ranging from N20,000 to N40,000 from students preparing for the National Youth Service Corps scheme.
"Victims of this extortion are prospective corps members wishing to be mobilised for the NYSC scheme after spending two or more years at home after graduation," he said.
Olamiti said the extortion was to ensure final clearance for mobilisation for the August batch of the scheme.
He disclosed that the ICPC had commenced investigations into the matter and urged institutions involved to remedy the situation in the interest of the students.
Olamiti said, "The petitions also indicated that some institutions that over-subscribed their quota for admission into the Nigerian Law School had resorted to sending only names of candidates, who allegedly gave bribes or peddled influence.
"The ICPC, therefore, directs all anti-corruption and transparency units to help their institutions to establish and publish a transparent corruption-free procedure for the selection of candidates proceeding to the Nigerian Law School."
