Love them or hate them, there are a few actresses that get the rumour mill going all year long. Whatever is said about them can either be true or false but it doesn’t really matter because we’re all rushing to read that newspaper/gossip magazine or click links just to get some gist. Here are 5 such Nollywood actresses who seem to effortlessly attract controversy.
TONTO DIKE
Yes I’m starting with the obvious here. I’m even tempted to put her name up twice on the list because of how much of afemme fataleshe is said to be. If it’s not some tweet or Instagram photo, then it’s gotta be an upcoming movie role or song that would make your ears bleed, who she’s dating, what she’s smoking, which new tattoo she’s getting (She’s said to have 57). Tonto is rumoured to regularly pick fights with her colleagues: she’s said not to take too kindly to Mercy Johnson and in 2011 she reportedly puffed a cigarette in Van Vicker’s face on a movie set. What about the time she gave her fans and followers a scare when she implied that she was going to commit suicide? Yeah, Tonto’s newsy like that.
IYABO OJO
A regular in the Yoruba movie genre of Nollywood, Iyabo Ojo is no stranger to controversy. She had one hell of a fight with a colleague, Lizzy Anjorin and it became so much of a big issue that some concerned industry stakeholders had to wade in to kill the flames. It was once reported that a top Lagos politician and former Senator gave her a Range Rover SUV and she’s no stranger to sex scandals, including reports of her being sighted engaged in steamy activity in a car in London. Currently, she’s in the news again for the cosmetic services she’s currently offering to women, which include, skin lightening, breast and butt enlargement amongst others.
GENEVIEVE NNAJI
While I’ll most likely crack up with laughter or raise an eyebrow upon hearing about a new antic of Tonto (see, you can’t just leave her alone), news about Genevieve still leaves you in a bit of doubt. Genny isn’t controversial because she really doesn’t attract negative attention to herself like that but attaining the height she has makes rumour mills churn at times. So you’re set to defend her like she’s paying you or you simply dismiss the rumour like it doesn’t really matter. It’s mostly about which celeb or politician she’s said to be dating (D’Banj, Ramsey Nouah, Richard Mofe-Damijo, Pat Attah, Atiku Abubakar) or which rival actress is hot on her tails (Omotola Jolade, Stephanie Okereke). Still, she enjoys a lot of goodwill and many are quick to dismiss those rumours because she’s quite professional, and really seems like a likeable person.
FUNKE AKINDELE
Funke was out of the controversy bracket for a while before her most recent fiasco of a marriage to Almaroof in 2012. Before she got married, there was a lot of controversy surrounding the union because she was getting married as a third wife. Things calmed down a bit after the wedding but tongues started wagging again when the marriage dramatically hit the rocks barely a year after the wedding. Now that she’s on her own again, it’s usually speculation about which actor or socialite she might or might not be dating.
INI EDO
This pretty screen diva has had to deal with many controversies, mostly sex scandals, including an alleged tryst with a state governor in the South-South region of Nigeria. Her marriage to Philip Ehiagwina was controversial even before they tied the knot as she was rumoured to have ‘snatched’ him off Ruth Okoro, a society lady. She was also said to have had an affair outside her then marriage to the US-based businessman as she was sighted leaving a nightclub with another man. They’re divorced now – it was quite bitter by the way with the husband’s family reportedly returning her bride price.
