Apparently Stephen, a heavy drinker who had spent the night drinking with his friend, Patrick Bentley at a Flat in Preston, Lancashire, attacked his best friend by slashing his throat with a kitchen knife from behind after asking him to stand up and show him how tall he was.
Aside slashing his friend's throat, he also stabbed him twice in the torso when he tried to escape but the court did not see him dangerous enough to be sentenced to life imprisonment.
Patrick narrowly escaped death after others and paramedics came to his aid as a doctor who treated him said the neck wound only just missed slicing into a number of major blood vessels.
Stephen who was however found guilty of attempted murder denied trying to kill his friend as he was confused and could not explain why he attacked his friend.
