 I greet and felicitate with you all as we enter the year 2014 which promises to be a momentous one for our country for several reasons, including the fact that it is also the year of our great nation's centenary celebrations. I join you all in giving thanks to God Almighty for guiding us and our beloved nation safely through all the challenges of the outgoing year to the beginning of 2014.
 Exactly 100 years ago today, on January 1, 1914, the British Colonial authorities amalgamated what was then the separate Protectorates of Southern Nigeria and Northern Nigeria, giving birth to the single geopolitical entity known as Nigeria. For us therefore, today is not just the beginning of a new year, but the end of a century of national existence and the beginning of another. It is a moment for sober reflection and for pride in all that is great about Nigeria.
 Whatever challenges we may have faced, whatever storms we may have confronted and survived, Nigeria remains a truly blessed country, a country of gifted men and women who continue to distinguish themselves in all spheres of life, a country whose diversity remains a source of strength. We pay tribute today, as always to our founding fathers and mothers, and all the heroes and heroines whose toil and sweat over the century made this country what it is today.
 As I noted, a few days ago, the amalgamation of 1914 was certainly not a mistake but a blessing. As we celebrate 100 years of nationhood, we must resolve to continue to work together as one, united people, to make our country even greater.
 I assure you that our administration remains fully committed to the progressive development of our country and the consolidation of peace, unity and democratic governance in our fatherland. Despite several continuing domestic and global challenges, for us in Nigeria, the year 2013 witnessed many positive developments which we will strive to build upon in 2014.

 He was accused of suggesting his bride was lying about her virginity during a public outburst in front of her father and other neighbourhood elders, according to a Saudi news website.
 The humiliated wife went to court to prove her honour and reputation, Al-Sharq Online reported.
 A judge in the Saudi city of Mecca ordered the public flogging of the Yemeni man to be carried out in one session because he could not offer any evidence to refute the claims.He says she had been married and divorced before marrying him.
 As is common in conservative parts of the Arab world, he says the marriage contract stipulated she was a virgin at the time of their wedding.

Ibrahim, an indigene of Niger State, was said to have raped the six and seven year olds in the toilet during school hours. It was learnt that the defendant had only been appointed to teach primary three pupil Islamic Studies in the Muslim school in August 2013. It was said that he was placed on a salary of N10,000 per month which he accepted to take. However, on December 18, 2013 he allegedly asked the victims (names withheld) to help him fetch water and take it to the toilet. He was said to have followed them there, undressed them and had carnal knowledge of them. The victims were said to have cried while the act was on, which attracted the attention of other kids. Ibrahim allegedly pushed them out and pretended as if nothing had happened. The victims were said to have been invited and interrogated by another teacher, who then related their confession to the school management. The defendant was subsequently arrested and he allegedly confessed to the crime. The police arraigned him on Monday on two counts of rape. The charge read, "That you, Mohammed Ibrahim, on December 18, 2013, at 11am at Al Adab Nursery and Primary School, Abalti Barracks Surulere, Lagos in the Lagos Magisterial District, did forcefully have unlawful sexual intercourse with a child named (name withheld) aged six years, which caused her harm. "That you on the same date, time and place, did unlawfully have sexual intercourse with a child (name withheld) aged 7 years, which caused her harm." The prosecutor, Inspector Richard Odige, said the offence was punishable under Section 137 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, Nigeria 2011. Ibrahim said he was not guilty of the offence. The affected kids were also in court with their parents. The defence counsel, Melda Bambo, appealed to the court to grant Ibrahim bail in liberal terms. The magistrate, Mrs Demi Ajayi, admitted him to bail in the sum of N1m with two sureties each in like sum. The matter was adjourned till January 29, 2014.

 A snake had emerged from below and bit him on his penis. When he looked into the toilet Mr Nkrumah nearly collapsed when he realised the snake was about to pounce on him again.
 The porter screamed for help but that caused panic and fear among other people using the public lavatories.
 Speaking on Kessben FMs Breaking News programme, Mr Nkrumah said he initially thought the pain was normal until he saw the black snake lying just beneath him.
 Mr Nkrumah was taken to hospital after he started shivering and feeling dizzy but has since been discharged.

The proud parents are 26-year-old Alexis Taborda and 28-year-old Karen Bruselario. Alexis was born a woman, but lives as a man and Karen was born a man, but lives as a woman. Because of Argentina's Gender Identity Law passed in May of 2012, the couple have both been able to legally change their genders without gender reassignment surgery, which meant that when they got pregnant via natural means, it was the man, Alexis, who carried the baby. So what about the baby?
 Well, the baby was due on December 22 via scheduled C-section, but couldn't wait. Alexis started having contractions the weekend before the scheduled birth, and the baby was born "early" weighing 9.37 pounds (that's a big baby) at Hospital Fermín Salaberry in Victoriain. The couple namedtheir baby girl Génesis Evangelina.
 I wish this family much strength, love, and perseverance. They have a tough road ahead of them. Both Alexis and Karen are unemployed at the moment. Even during the pregnancy, they faced economic trials. At five months of pregnancy, Alexis had to go out and sell roscas on the street while Karen sold food for money.
 They are grateful for all the help and gifts they have received from not only friends, but strangers as well.
 Alexis and Karen do not only hold the distinction of being the first transgender couple to give birth in Argentina they are also the first transgender couple to have gotten married while the groom was pregnant.
 They officially tied the knot in November.

 The 42-year-old lady tied the knot in Edinburgh, accompanied to a registry office in the Scottish capital wearing a white gown as well as pink and flowers around her hair.
 Mrs. Davidson for this special occasion naturally kept her trademark piercings all in place, along with green, yellow and blue paint markings on her face.

 The newly-made husband, Douglas Watson, with no piercings detected, was wearing for the ceremony a dark blue suit with a blue shirt and tie.
 The Brazilian-born former nurse first broke the record for most piercings in May 2000, when a Guinness World Records official examined her and found 462 piercings on her body, including 192 on her face.
 The woman used to say she never removes the rings and studs, which she estimates weigh a total of around three kilos.
 Moreover, she insists there is no pain involved in the piercing, and that she sleeps every night with every piercing still in place.
 Still, later, in 2009 she confessed like being pieced and suffers for her art.

This woman's case is one sad example. Read what she told Punch's Toyosi Ogunseye below... When did you get married? We got marr ied in 2004 Did you do HIV tests before you got married? Yes, we did. It was a compulsory test before getting married. We were both HIV negative. When did you realise you had the virus? It was in 2007. I got pregnant and was asked to do some random tests. That was how I found out I was HIV positive. Do you know how you contracted the virus? Sometimes, it's difficult to tell because there are so many ways through which one can get the virus but you can trace it if you vividly remember the activities you engaged in for some months and years. Can you explain what you mean by activities one engages in? In my case, my husband married me a virgin and like I told you earlier, I was HIV negative and so was he when we got married. Certain things happened to me that exposed me to unhealthy practices and I believe strongly that that was how I got HIV. Unhealthy practices? I could not conceive when I got married. My husband was not worried because it was a young marriage, but his family members were not happy with me. They said all sorts of nasty things to me and tried to get my husband to send me out of the house. It created tension in my home. I went to different churches and herbalists within and outside Lagos. In the herbalist's home, I was given incisions with a razor blade. I received the incisions on two different occasions. Then in 2007, my mother-in-law arranged a new wife for my husband behind my back. Did he tell you about the new wife? No. In fact, I didn't know until much later. It was one of my friends in the village that told me what my mother-in-law had been up to. My husband just told me that he was going to our village to see his mum. I did not suspect anything. It was on that trip they introduced the new wife to him. He rejected the wife and came back to Lagos but he did not tell me anything. One day, one of my friends called me and asked me if I knew what my husband came to the village for. She narrated the scheme to me and I confronted my husband. He said he didn't tell me because it would hurt me. He reasoned that since he didn't take the wife, I would be happy not knowing what transpired in the village. It was that same year my in-laws wanted to get another wife for my husband that I got pregnant. That is why I counsel women that patience is everything. I got pregnant when God was ready to give me a child. It wasn't the herbalist or white garment churches that made it possible. They gave me some very horrible concoctions to drink in those churches after praying on them. They took me to rivers to have my bath. When I saw that all those things were not working, I stopped. Several months after, I just discovered I was pregnant. In fact, I remember vividly that at the herbalist's place, I didn't give them the blade that was used for the incisions. That was the least thing on my mind, I just wanted a baby. How many people did you see at the herbalist each time you went? Quite a few, mostly women and it was the quest for children that took them there. They also got incisions. Was it with the same blade? I'm not sure about that because we went in at separate times How did your husband receive the news of your status? Towards the end of 2007, I got pregnant. He felt very bad when he heard about my status. He was downcast. I thought it was the end of our marriage. I thought it was the end of everything I struggled to keep. He shocked me when he said he was not going to leave me and it wasn't the end of the world but that he needed to do the test too. He did it and he was negative. I gave birth to our child and she's negative. Do you experience any sort of stigmatisation? No, my status is known to only my husband and I, and he has never used it to taunt me in any way. That is how I know that he truly loves me. Of course, it took him some time to get over it, it was very gradual but he took it calmly. We were both very sad. We went for counselling together. I told him that it was my desperation to have a child that forced me to seek alternative measures. He didn't know I went to all those places. He's very understanding and I sometimes wonder if he's for real. What steps do you take to ensure he remains negative? We have two children now and they are both negative. He uses a condom and whenever we are trying to procreate, we are both placed on drugs to ensure that he doesn't contract it. I have spoken to a few women who share similar experiences with you. What advice would you give to women, especially the married ones that are yet to have children?I wish our society would just leave couples alone and stop interfering with whether they have children or not. That is the problem, everyone feels they should have a say in one's marriage. The first step is that couples should not allow family members or friends tell them what is best for them. Also women should be patient. Just look at me, if I had been patient, all these would not have happened to me. Couples should know that God's time is the best. I also want to say that HIV does not kill. What kills is depression and laziness. Some people will say because they are HIV positive, they will stop working and start being dependent on others. Being dependent on other people will affect one's psyche, lead to depression and eventually death. In addition I will advise people, spread the news, but don't spread the virus.

 "Gladstone has showed how the body's own immune response to HIV causes CD4 T cell death via a pathway triggering inflammation, and secondly by identifying the host DNA sensor that detects the viral DNA and triggers this death response," said Dr. Robert F.Further, they have identified an existing anti-inflammatory drug that in laboratory tests blocks the death of these cells — and now are planning a Phase 2 clin ical trial to determine if this drug or a similar drug can prevent HIV-infected people from developing AIDS.
 Two separate journal articles, published simultaneously in Nature and Science, detail the research from the laboratory of Dr. Warner C. Greene, who directs virology and immunology research at Gladstone, an independent biomedical-research nonprofit.
 His lab's Science paper reveals how, during an HIV infection, a protein known as IFI16 senses fragments of HIV DNA in abortively infected immune cells. This triggers the activation of the human enzyme caspase-1 and leads to pyroptosis, a fiery and highly inflammatory form of cell death.
 As revealed in Nature, this repetitive cycle of abortive infection, cell death, inflammation and recruitment of additional CD4 T cells to the infection "hot zone" ultimately destroys the immune system and causes AIDS.
 Siliciano, a professor of medicine at Johns Hopkins University, and a Howard Hughes Medical Institute investigator. "This one-two punch of discoveries underscores the critical value of basic science — by uncovering the major cause of CD4 T cell depletion in AIDS, Dr. Greene's lab has been able to identify a potential new therapy for blocking the disease's progression and improving on current antiretroviral medications."

 According to the information provided by the Sun, the man inserted the 20-inch-long Asian swamp eel into his anus after seeing it done in a porn movie, and he had to endure all-night surgery to have it extracted.
 The eel reportedly chewed through the man's colon, perforating his large intestine, and became stuck in his body cavity. A graphic X-ray image shows how far inside the eel was when the man came in for treatment.
 Doctors revealed the eel, which was "simply trying to find its way out,"was alive when removed but died shortly thereafter.
 The Chinese man is still in hospital recovering. He might face animal cruelty charges.
 The Asian swamp eel - also known as the rice eel or rice paddy eel - is a snake-shaped fish that is commonly sold live at food markets in East Asian countries.
 Although this type of eel is known as an invasive species in parts of the United States, this isn't the first time that it's made its way into (ahem) foreign habitats.
 In 2012, a New Zealand man had to have an eel removed from his posterior. In 2010, a Chinese man died after his friends allegedly inserted an eel into his rectum as a joke.

 The student, identified simply as Lee, was studying design at Jilin University in Changchun.
 He previously told police that he had been failing a lot of classes and called the prostitutes to help relieve the pressure.
 Lee narrated that he used to have fantasies about having sex with dead bodies, necrophilia, and decided one morning that he could no longer resist carrying it out.
 iFeng.com reports that on March 6, 2013 he hired a 20-year-old prostitute called Cai through the Internet.
 Lee then hanged her and had her body shipped back to his house in Changping, where he had intercourse with the corpse. It was then dismembered and the parts buried in Lee's garden.
 He carried out the same macabre act on the body of another prostitute that he'd hanged and shipped home on March 23, 2013.
 A forensic psychiatrist determined that Lee wasn't insane and was criminally responsible for the crimes.
 The Second Intermediate People's Court found him guilty of intentional homicide and sentenced him to death.
 It also ordered him to pay 80,000 yuan (N20,800,000) in compensation to the victims' families.

 It said the motion for the strike will be decided at their congress slated for early January, if no tangible progress is made. This was disclosed by the Chairman of ASUU-LASU, Dr. Adekunle Idris, at a press conference held at the university campus.
 Idris said the national body of ASUU is aware that the issue had been there before the national strike commenced on July 1. He accused the university management of not being sensitive to the situation on campus, saying " at all press contacts during the national strike, it always impressed on stakeholders to intervene so that students can enjoy uninterrupted school calendar after the struggle, which they fail to do."
 On the demands, he said the governing council must implement the universities (Miscellaneous provisions) amendment act 2012, passed by the Federal Government, for the effective running of universities, which the Lagos State Government had agreed to implement.
 Other demands are – the immediate regularization of appointment of academic staff currently on temporary appointment and recall of all academic staff on temporary appointment who were disengaged unjustly.
